The South Korean survival drama titled ‘Squid Game’ came out
on Netflix less than a month ago and since then its popularity has grown at a
very high trajectory. In fact, it has already managed to overtake Netflix’s
biggest and most popular series (until now) ‘Bridgerton’.

It hasn’t been long since Netflix’s CEO, Ted Sarandos said
that Squid Game had the potential of becoming the streaming giants’ biggest
series yet if it managed to hold the early viewership numbers.

Ever since the show’s release it has managed to retain the
number one spot in Netflix’s “Top 10s”. The series which has a total of nine
episodes in its first season revolves around a group of 456 contestants, all of
whom are struggling for money.

If they manage to win the children’s game, they will get a reward
of approximately $38.7 million which will end all of their woes
instantaneously. However, the catch is that only one ultimate winner will
survive while the others are eliminated by death.

The elimination concept is similar to that of popular hits The
Hunger Games and Battle Royale. The show has become a pop culture phenomenon
and resulted in thousands of memes surfacing on the internet with people going
crazy over the show.

The thriller has been viewed by 111 million accounts since
its launch. The previous record holder Briderton managed to garner 82 million
views in the first 28 days since its premiere. Netflix counts a view as anyone
who has streamed an episode for two minutes.

Believe it or not but the show has even impacted the sales
of Halloween costumes with several people looking to dress up as their favourite
Squid Game character.

The show’s massive success comes as a surprise considering
the fact that it had no recognizable star power from Hollywood which would have
pulled the viewers in. Yet, it managed to draw an audience solely on the basis
of a brilliant storyline.

Squid Game has a direct approach on addressing the problems
of the society, economic and political happenings in the country which adds to
its uniqueness.
