The new trailer for the Superbowl LVI halftime show promises a star-studded 12-minute performance on February 13. It unites hip hop legends Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige, as they answer a call from none other than Dr Dre. 

Directed by F. Gary Gray, the man who helmed the NWA biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton’, the trailer shows the artists unite outside the SoFi Stadium, in Inglewood, California. While Eminem is engaged in a battle of words with his alter ego, Slim Shady, he gets the call which makes him rush to catch an aeroplane. 

The scene then transitions to Snoop Dogg, and all that’s good about the West Coast lowrider rap culture popularized in many of Snoop’s tunes like ‘Gin and Juice’. He too gets a similar call and turns his car around. Next, we transition to Mary J. Blige whose glamorous escapade is again interrupted by the call, and finally, we have Kendrick Lamar, hard at work penning verses, before he answers this mysterious call too. 

Finally, the trailer introduces us to the caller, Dr Dre, the producer extraordinaire, who shaped hip hop history since he founded Aftermath records, signing prodigies like Eminem and Lamar. Of course, Dre shares a special bond with Snoop Dogg as well, having collaborated numerous times while they were signed with Death Row records. Between the two of them, they gave a distinctively breezy style to West Coast hip hop.

Gray spoke about collaborating with Dre again, for the Jay-Z-produced halftime show, saying, “Each time I collaborate with Dre, it seems to mark an important moment in entertainment history, from projects like Friday, Set It Off, Straight Outta Compton, to now the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show. As a super fan, I consider it an honour and privilege to authentically build and create this moment with five of the most legendary artists in music history. It’s been a blast!”

Notably, this is the first time in 30 years that the Super Bowl takes place in the Los Angeles area. Dre, who grew up in Compton, expressed excitement about the upcoming Super Bowl, saying “The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and to do it in my own backyard, will be one of the biggest thrills of my career. I’m grateful to Jay-Z, Roc Nation, the NFL, and Pepsi as well as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar for joining me in what will be an unforgettable cultural moment.”
