The much-anticipated musical film adaption of the well-known classic The Colour Purple launched a trailer on Monday afternoon. The film’s prestigious producers are Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. The movie is directed by Blitz Bazawule.

When Winfrey debuted a sneak peek of the movie in April at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, she told the audience that the 1985 movie “was the biggest and most important thing that happened to me.” She continued by stating that it still has “great personal meaning.”

So, on Monday, a trailer for the much anticipated musical film remake of the beloved classic film was made public.

The American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino will reprise her in the remake, playing the youthful Celie Harris Johnson opposite Phylicia Mpasi. Halle Bailey of The Little Mermaid fame plays young Nettie Harris, while Ciara plays Nettie Harris.

The cast includes Taraji P. Henson who plays the flamboyant blues singer Shug Avery, Danielle Brooks who plays Sofia, H.E.R. who plays Mary Agnes (Squeak), and Corey Hawkins who plays Harpo Johnson.

The remake of “The Colour Purple,” which Warner Bros. has dubbed “a bold new take on the beloved classic,” centers on the challenges and lives of Black women in the South in the early 1900s.

The movie has a distinguished past: it was formerly a Pulitzer Prize–winning book, an Oscar–nominated film, and a Tony Award–winning musical. The high-profile movie is slated to premiere on Christmas Day 2023.

The launch of the pictures caused a stir on social media, with one Twitter user commenting, “Look at the cast. Look at Fantasia holding her throat to sing. Give her, and the rest of them all the Oscars early,” while the other person wrote, “Oh. My. God… I am obsessed with this musical score and I’m Here is one of the best theatre songs ever written, I cannot wait to see this.”

A third person said, “How did I not know they were remaking The Colour Purple? Also lmao they better do it well because that movie is an all time classic. Trailer looks good though.”
