The soundtracks of Star Wars movies and television shows are among the most recognizable, and The Mandalorian- a new season of which will be the outcome on March 1 – is no exception.

The music by the legendary John Williams, to which the iconic Star Wars opening crawl plays out, sets the tone for each of the original films. The franchise’s musical library has been expanded with the addition of The Mandalorian soundtrack, which was composed by Swedish musician Ludwig Göransson.

Though it is very different, The Mandalorian theme song is unmistakably from the same family. John Williams, who has composed the music for all of the Star Wars movies since 1977 and is the man behind such well-known tunes as “The Imperial March” and “The Force,” has a significant influence on Göransson. In fact, according to Variety, many of the orchestra members who recorded the score for The Mandalorian also worked on the 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Göransson has a body of work that makes him worthy of providing music for the popular Disney+ series. Göransson won an Oscar in 2019 for the Black Panther score and has been nominated this year for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He has also won two Emmys for The Mandalorian and several Grammys. Goransson also received much acclaim for his work with writer-actor-musician Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino. Göransson reportedly met writer-actor-musician Donald Glover while composing for the NBC show Community. Since then, the two men have worked together on a number of Childish Gambino (Glover’s stage name) projects, including the widely praised album Awaken, My Love and the popular song “This Is America.”

Ludwig Göransson was brought onto The Mandalorian team early in the process when co-creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni had the scripts written and concept art prepared. After getting a sneak peek at the universe through pictures and reading the first season’s plots, Göransson set to work.

“I wanted to connect with the feeling I had as a kid when I watched Star Wars for the first time,” Göransson told Insider in an interview. “And I think the only way to come back to that feeling was to step away from the computer and just fill up my studio with real instruments like guitars, the piano, drums, ’70s synthesizers, and instruments that I could touch.”

The Mandalorian season 3 begins on March 1 on DisneyPlus. Season 2 premiered in Oct 2020. The first season was launched in November 2019. Pedro Pascal played the Mandalorian in the eight-episode season.
