The Redeem Team has been produced by Netflix in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee and will be made available worldwide on the streaming service on October 7. 

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, two NBA icons, have reunited as executive producers and subjects of the new documentary, which honours the successful 2008 Olympics U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball team.

The official twitter account of Netflix posted a tweet announcing the same:

Lebron James also retweeted, writing,” Yessir!!! Going to be a SPECIAL 1!!!” and also tagged Dwayne Wade. 

The documentary follows the team’s quest for gold in Beijing following a disappointing bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens with behind-the-scenes video and interviews from the players and coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Speaking to Variety about his involvement in the documentry, Wade said,” In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, all stars, friends and future teammates. Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball! I’m excited for everyone to get an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see all the work that went into this iconic team — The Redeem Team!”

The 2008 team, which also featured James, Wade, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, and Carmelo Anthony, was led by Kobe Bryant as its captain. The group, whose moniker alludes to the legendary “Dream Team” of 1992, who defeated Spain in the gold medal match.

Jon Weinbach, a producer of the Netflix documentary series “The Last Dance” on Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls, is the director of The Redeem Team. Other projects by Weinbach included executive producing the documentary series The Comedy Store and nine Olympic Channel documentaries. He also formerly worked as a staff reporter at the Wall Street Journal and produced and wrote the PGA award-nominated documentary The Other Dream Team.
