Thor: Love and Thunder‘ sees the mighty Asgardian’s longtime weapon Mjolnir in the hands of Jane Foster, Natalie Portman’s character. This gives her the powers of the Mighty Thor, but Mjolnir has to piece itself together for Foster to use it.

The hammer had been shattered by Thor’s sister, Hela, in ‘Ragnarok‘. However, to live up to its promise to Thor, Mjolnir becomes whole again. This gives the hammer one additional power, apart from being used as a projectile weapon, and a conduit for lightning strikes.

The new Mjolnir can break apart into shards, and each becomes small, but deadly, projectiles allowing the wielder to take out multiple enemies at once. Foster makes good use of this power, both when she is introduced as the Mighty Thor for the first time, taking down Gorr’s shadow monsters, and when she fights Zeus’ guards in Omnipotence City. The latter made its way to the trailer as well, with keen observers pointing out the new power.

The deconstructed nature of the hammer also allows Foster to take in the broken shards of the Necrosword into the hammer, and bring it down in one fells swoop, destroying the pieces, and the rest of the sword that’s capable of killing gods.

Considering Mjolnir is made of a near-indestructible material, each individual shard can cause immense damage, which makes the new power more exciting. Thor is often up against swarms of enemies, and Mjolnir’s new abilities would help the God of Thunder fight the good fight even better.

Foster’s had Mjolnir throughout the film but after her death, Thor takes control of his old weapon. Of course, by now, Eternity’s child has added her own unique art on the hammer’s body, as seen in the final moments of the film. Despite being Foster’s weapon, Mjolnir considered Thor worthy to lift and wield it, all throughout.
