‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, the fourth Thor movie, sees Jane Foster gain the powers of the Mighty Thor and wield Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer, in battle. Hela, Thor’s sister, had destroyed said hammer in ‘Ragnarok’, forcing Thor to forge the Stormbreaker, when he needed to take down Thanos.

However, the hammer calls out to Jane, while she’s battling cancer. The scientist goes to New Asgard, where she examines the shards of the hammer. They start to come together, bound by lightning and eventually reformulate to the original state. Mjolnir lives up to its myth and rejuvenates Foster as long as she wields the hammer. As the Mighty Thor, her cancer doesn’t seem to affect her, but using the hammer drains her mortal strength, leaving her body unable to fight this cancer, making it a double-edged sword.

Throughout the films and comics, Mjolnir has been Thor’s trusted weapon and has responded to him. The saying goes, whosoever is found to be worthy of Mjolnir, can possess the power of Thor. Hulk tried lifting Mjolnir in the first Avengers movie and failed. In Ultron, everyone had a go, but failed, apart from Vision. ‘Endgame’ saw the rare exception, where Mjolnir thought Captain America to be worthy enough. Thor’s companion in battle, the hammer and the Asgardian share a bond. Thus, its loyalty to Thor is beyond question.

‘Love and Thunder’ shows how Thor had told Mjolnir to make a promise to him that it’d protect Jane, no matter what. The depth of their love seems to have been equal to magic, and Mjolnir responds to Thor’s request by trying to save Foster from cancer, giving her the powers of the Mighty Thor.

While Natalie Portman’s Foster might have grown comfortable with Mjolnir, Thor heaves a sigh of relief to see that he can still lift his old weapon. By the end of the film, however, Thor is reunited with Mjolnir, while Eternity‘s child fights using Stormbreaker.
