For those who don’t have time to keep track of the comics that Marvel releases, the Thunderbolts are an ever-changing group of villains who sometimes disguise themselves as heroes for their nefarious deeds. Other times, the villains find themselves in situations where they have no choice but to be the good guys.

If any of this sounds familiar, its because the Thunderbolts and DC’s Suicide Squad are really just the different sides of the same coin. Between the two groups, DC introduced the villains turned to heroes trope to comics with Suicide Squad in 1959, Marvel Comics followed up nearly 40 years later with the introduction of the Thunderbolts in a 1997 issue of the Incredible Hulk.

Marvel Studios has been setting up Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its current phase using characters that have been initially showing up as antagonists. Characters like ‘Hawkeye’s’ Yelena Boleva and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s” John Walker played Wyatt Russel have been getting nudged by the scheming Valentina Allegra de Fontaine played by Julia Louise Dreyfus towards joining her team for reasons still unknown.

Even the charismatic Baron Zeemo, who made an appearance in ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ will likely show up in the ‘Thunderbolts’ movie.

If you’re looking to find out a little bit more about who the Thunderbolts are, a quick and painless way to do it without sifting through decades worth of comics would be looking at the 2021-2022 run, “Devil’s Reign.’ The six issue arc sees New York crime boss Wilson Fisk try to bring down A-list superheroes like The Fantastic Four, Captain America, Spiderman and Iron Man. To do so, Fisk throws the current Thunderbolt villains, Crossbones, Kraven, Typhoid Mary, Shocker, Taskmaster, Whiplash, and Rhino at the heroes.
