Tim Westwood, a British DJ, is being sued by a woman who claims they had sex several times starting when she was 14 while he was in his 30s.

The woman is one of several who have come forward following an investigation by BBC News and the Guardian, with allegations of misconduct and abuse ranging from 1990 to 2020.

Westwood has been marred with controversy for quite some time.

In 2000, Westwood was accused of giving false information about his age and background in the media. Westwood continued to insist to a Guardian journalist, at the age of 43, that he was 27.

On 6 June 2006, the Leader of the Conservative Party and then Leader of the Opposition, David Cameron, speaking at a British Society of Magazine Editors event, accused BBC Radio 1 and Westwood’s show in particular of encouraging knife and gun crime.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt responded in an article published by the Press Association: “There’s been a debate about this particular genre of music for many years. Hip-hop is of great interest to many people in our audience. I strongly refute that any of our programmes condone violence, gun crime or knife crime”.

In 2013, Westwood left the BBC. He moved to Capital Xtra, but after allegations against him emerged in April, his employer, Global, publicly stated that he would be leaving the show “until further notice.”

In 2020, Westwood was accused of behaving inappropriately with young student fans. The accusation began trending on Twitter after an unnamed woman posted messages describing a four year relationship.

A petition #mutetimwestwood on the Change.org website had gathered over 150 signatures, calling for an investigation into his behaviour.

Westwood has a reputation among black female students, according to the person who started the petition, who wrote: ‘He has forged for himself as a hip-hop icon and proponent of Black British culture – with all the privilege that his whiteness allows him.’

In 2022, The Guardian and BBC conducted a joint investigation and cited the victim’s testimony, in which she described the 64-year-old as a “predator.”

The BBC/Guardian investigation revealed last week that the corporation was reviewing six complaints against Westwood, despite previously claiming that it had no records of any complaints. It was announced on Tuesday that an internal investigation into the accusations would be published within the next two weeks.
