‘True Detective‘ has finalized its main cast for the fourth season on HBO. Joel D. Montgrand, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Aka Niviana have joined the cast of the anthology series. Along with the previously announced Jodie Foster and boxer/actor Kali Reis, Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers), John Hawkes (Deadwood, Winter’s Bone), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve), Anna Lambe (Three Pines) and Finn Bennett (Domina) have been set as leads.
The upcoming season, titled Night Country and set in Alaska, will mark the first time that Nic Pizzolatto will not write and direct the show. However, he has retained an executive producer credit. Issa Lopez (Shudder’s Tigers Are Not Afraid) will serve as showrunner and direct several episodes.
Niviana will play Navarro’s sister Julia, who is dealing with demons from both her past and her mind. The stepdaughter of Danvers, Leah, will be portrayed on screen as a young woman fighting for her voice and identity by Lablanc. Eddie Qavvik, a local musher with strong ties to Ennis, will be played by Montgrand. He is also Navarro’s love interest.
It is Niviana’s first appearance on screen
In her native Greenland, Niviana works as a writer, poet, and climate activist. It is her first appearance on screen in ‘True Detective.’ She is represented by Liberman Zerman Management. Lablanc (Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota) has roles in the upcoming Pet Sematary prequel for Paramount+ and Spectrum’s Long Slow Exhale. In addition to having roles in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series on Netflix, Montgrand (Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation) has appeared in the television shows Legends of Tomorrow and Altered Carbon.
“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice,” reads the synopsis for season four.
