Bollywood remake of popular Tamil movie ‘Vikram Vedha‘ hit the theatres on Friday. The movie stars Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan. The original movie starred Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead. The thriller is based loosely on the Indian folktale, ‘Vikram aur Betaal’.

Story of ‘Vikram aur Betaal’- 

The plot of ‘Vikram aur Betaal’ revolves around King Vikramaditya and a witty ghost Betaal. 

A mendicant sends the king, known to be brave and fearless, on a mission to remove a corpse from a treetop, which is in the middle of the jungle. The corpse is possessed by a ghost named Betaal.

Betaal, a very clever ghost, loves to narrate stories. Ever time the king attempts to capture the ghost, it tells a story and after completing the story, it would pose a question.

Betaal tells the king that if he knows the answer but decides to not tell, his head shall burst into thousand pieces. And if the king answers, Betaal fly back to the treetop. The king answers all questions and therefore the cycle of catching and releasing Betaal continues 24 times. 

On the 25th attempt, Betaal is satisfied by the the king’s answer and allows him to take it to the mendicant.

On the way to the mendicant, Betaal tells him story and reveals that the mendicant wants to sacrifice it to become immortal and rule the world. Betaal also reveals the mendicant’s plan to sacrifice Vikram

Betaal is proved right as the mendicant tries to kill Vikramaditya, who manages to outwit the mendicant and kill him.
