Season 3 of The Boys is in full swing, with fans and critics alike praising the show for its outlandish sequences intertwined with first-rate storytelling. We’ve certainly seen plenty of bloodshed and depravity, but it appears like things will pick up this week. It’d be difficult to top the wickedness we’ve seen thus far, but if anything can, it’s Herogasm.

The dastardly event will be featured in Episode 6, which will be broadcast on Friday, but why everybody is so excited?

Herogasm is well-known among The Boys comic book fans, and it was recounted in a six-issue series published in 2009. The event’s name is quite self-explanatory. Vought’s heroes from throughout the country attend the invite-only event held on an isolated tropical island once a year. They participate in a variety of unpleasant behaviours while here, with the motto “anything goes.” Orgies, drugs, drinks, and strippers are all on the plate at this immoral feast.

Sex workers are sent in for the supes to sleep with, but sleeping with each other is not uncommon. In fact, in one scenario from the comics, Homelander slept with Soldier Boy in exchange for a spot in The Seven. Given the series’ ongoing storyline, it’s unlikely that will happen.

Herogasm, the comic’s spin-off series, was fraught with scandal and garnered harsh condemnation for its graphic representations. The miniseries’ September 11th narrative was one of its most contentious elements. According to the comics, The Seven were involved in the tragedy, saving one of the jetliners from crashing into the World Trade Center, although instead guiding it onto the Brooklyn Bridge in their typical negligent manner.

The tale has already been modified and re-imagined as the Flight 37 event between Homelander and Queen Maeve, so we’re unlikely to see that onscreen. In terms of Maeve, Ashley’s reason for her absence in Episode 5 may have hinted at the event, telling Starlight that Maeve is now on a healing retreat in Malibu. This might very well be the setting for the latest Herogasm episode, though it’s difficult to see Maeve going there on purpose.

Due to the incredibly gruesome nature of the event, showrunner Eric Kripke is limited in the extent he can go in the TV portrayal of the infamous event. In an interview with The Wrap, Kripke discusses their “self-censorship,” but adds, “anyone who is a fan of the books and that particular volume of ‘Herogasm,’ I can just tell you, you’re definitely going to get the full Herogasm experience.” Although we won’t see it all from the comics, which is a good thing, it appears that we’re in for a pretty epic film.

Of course, the comics’ plot is more than just the multiple drug-fueled encounters. Instead, it follows The Boys as they invade the Vought event and uncover previously unknown mysteries about The Seven. This is obviously something the episode may be based on, and it’ll be interesting to see characters like Butcher and Hughie entangled in such a horrible occurrence.

Herogasm has been eagerly awaited since its announcement about a year ago, and it was even trending worldwide this week as supporters’ anticipation for the event grew. The waiting game is almost over, and “Unholy week is here,” as The Boys’ Twitter account recently tweeted.
