Gates told the Oscar winning actress that elder Roberts died more than a decade before her great grandfather John, was born to her great-great-grandmother, Rhoda Suttle Roberts in the 1800s.
“Willis Roberts could not possibly be your great, great grandfather. He was dead,” Gates said.
“But, oh wait, am I not a Roberts?” was the actor’s reaction to the revelation.
From the research Gates and the team conducted, Roberts could be linked to Henry McDonald Mitchell Jr., who was her biological great-great-grandfather. “So we’re Mitchells?” Roberts asked Gates.
Gates responded, “You’re Julia Mitchell. You are not a Roberts biologically.”
“Wow,” Roberts said. “Is my head on straight still? Am I facing you?”
The research indicates that Mitchell was married with six children and his mother lived four houses away from Rhoda Suttle Roberts.

“On the one hand, truly my mind is blown. And it is fascinating,” she said. “And on the other hand, there is, you know, part of me when I’m calmer, you know, can still wrap my arms around the idea that, you know, my family is my family. And I do prefer the name Roberts.”
Roberts recently starred in Ticket to Paradise, a 2022 film alongside another acclaimed actor George Clooney. The two star as a divorce couple, who pair up to sabotage their daughter’s marriage. Clooney and Roberts last starred together in Money Monster, which was released in 2016.
