The recent verdict, which held rapper Tory Lanez guilty in the Megan Thee Stallion shooting case, left his father upset, who started screaming about the “worst miscarriage of justice that this world has ever seen.” Sonstar Peterson read out a list of names including Stallion’s lawyer Alex Spiro, the COO of Stallion’s label Roc Nation Desiree Perez, “and the whole wicked system of Roc Nation, including you JAY-Z.”

He then took a jibe at JAY-Z, saying “you who say you rose from the gutter, but you have traded and bartered the souls of young men, and you’re still doing it.”

What is Roc Nation?

Roc Nation is an entertainment company based in Manhattan. Although it initially started as a record label, the company has expanded into the domain of sports, management, television, and film, and fashion to name a few. 

A brainchild of widely acclaimed rapper Jay Z, it was started in 2008 in Manhattan, where it is headquartered. The very first artist to be signed to this label was J Cole, a rapper who has won several accolades, including a Grammy for Best Song (for his song A Lot, which featured fellow rapper 21 Savage). 

Despite being an independent label, it signed a four-year contract will Sony Music in 2009, primarily a distribution deal with the multinational music company. Other partnerships of Roc Nation include its deal with Live Nation, one of the largest live event organizers; Warner Music, initiating an international music publishing deal and Universal Music regarding distribution after their deal with Sony Music expired in 2013. 

It was in 2013 that the idea of a sports subsidiary was pitched, Roc Nation Sports, securing a representation for professional athletes.

Roc Nation has signed several successful artists across genres, including Alicia Keys, Meghan Thee Stallion, Big Sean and Rihanna. They have also worked with NBA stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. 

The company has opened its offices in several cities; New York City, Nashville, Austin, TX, Los Angeles; and London, UK. 

The success of Roc Nation is credited to its diverse specialization, catering to a multiplicity of artists and genres.
