Celine Dion has cancelled the remaining dates of her world tour, telling fans she is not strong enough to perform following her diagnosis of an incurable neurological condition.

The Canadian singer told fans on Friday she was “tremendously disappointed” to “let them down”.

The “Because You Loved Me” singer published a list of her 42 cancelled European performances along with a letter on Instagram. She was diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in December 2022.

The neurological condition stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is uncommon and progressive. It can cause stiff muscles in the arms, legs, and trunk as well as increased sensitivity to sound, touch, and emotional distress, which can cause muscle spasms.

People with SPS may eventually adopt hunched-over postures. Some individuals might not be able to walk or move. Because they lack the regular reflexes to catch themselves, many people frequently fall. Significant injuries may result from this. Due to the fact that street noises, such as the sound of a car horn, can produce spasms and falls, people with SPS can get scared to leave the house.

Females are twice as likely as guys to get SPS. Other autoimmune conditions like type I diabetes, thyroiditis, vitiligo, and pernicious anemia are frequently linked to it. Although studies suggests that SPS is the result of an immunological reaction that went wrong in the brain and spinal cord, the exact origin of SPS is still unknown.

When the Grammy winner first shared her diagnosis in an emotional Instagram video last year, she noted that she had been “dealing with problems with [her] health for a long time.”

“Recently I have been diagnosed with a very rare neurological syndrome, which affects something like one in a million people,” she continued at the time, explaining that the condition was the cause of all the muscle spams she had been experiencing since 2021.
