In an interview, the Guardians of the Galaxy director said, “The amount of good third episodes in a trilogy, I can count them on one hand.”
According to him, the Before Sunrise series, Lord of the Rings, and Spiderman are the very few trilogies that were successful and well-made.
So, when the third part of Guardians of the Galaxy was announced, he knew that it had to be a big one. After the second part of the series was released, Gunn felt that there was still a lot in the story to be conveyed. He thought that the story was still unfinished.

Gunn, while addressing the third chapter stated, “This is where things really happen. This is where we get to know the truth about who these characters are, and we face the biggest stakes.”
