Stephen Richard Wright is an English radio host and disc jockey who is credited with introducing the zany, multi-personality zoo format to British radio. He hosted Steve Wright in the Afternoon for 12 years on BBC Radio 1 and 23 years on BBC Radio 2. The latter was the most popular station in the UK and would come to an end on September 30, 2022.

Early Life

The 68 year old grew up in New Cross after being born in Greenwich, South London, as the older of two boys in a working-class household. Steve periodically used the school’s speaker system to broadcast a nascent radio show from the school’s supply closet. Wright began working for the BBC in the early 1970s as a returns clerk at the Gramophone Library at Egton House, next to the programming House in London.

Career

He left the organization in 1976 to begin programming with Mike Read at Thames Valley Radio Radio 210 in Reading, Berkshire. Wright’s big break came in 1979 at Radio Luxembourg, where he hosted his own nightly show before moving on to Saturday morning and Saturday evening.

Wright began broadcasting on BBC Radio 1 in 1980, taking over a Saturday evening shift before later that year switching to Saturday mornings. His Sunday Love Songs weekend mid-morning program is still broadcast on Radio 2. Wright has presented a number of shows for BBC Television, including Top of the Pops, Auntie’s TV Favorites, The Steve Wright People Show, and TOTP2. Wright has received honors, including the 1994 Daily Mirror Readers Poll and Smash Hits Best DJ of the Year awards. He received the TRIC Personality of the Year award in 1998 for his radio shows.

Family

Wright’s private life is not well known. He has two kids and was married to Cyndi Robinson until their divorce in 1999.
