Billy Batson is Shazam, a young DC Comics superhero endowed by the Wizard with the abilities of ancient gods.

During Dick Grayson’s time as Robin, Billy Batson was bestowed by the Wizard with the ability to turn into a formidable champion at the mention of a single word- Shazam! He lives in Fawcett, a neighbourhood just outside of Philadelphia.

In the film, young Billy is an orphan living in Philadelphia who caught the eye of a renowned, elderly wizard, who granted him extraordinary magical abilities and assigned him with guarding the Rock of Eternity (an enchanted place at the nexus of space and time). When Billy shouts the word “Shazam!” he transforms into a powerful hero with superpowers comparable to Superman’s.

Billy is portrayed as leading a dual life since then. Some days he’s a lonely foster child trying to find his place in the world, and other days he fights monsters like the villainous Dr. Sivana or his deranged progenitor, Black Adam. It’s all in a day’s work for Shazam.

Shazam’s name is an abbreviation for the six mythological figures who bestow him with his abilities. He possesses Solomon’s wisdom, Hercules’ strength, Atlas’ endurance, Zeus’ might, Achilles’ bravery, and Mercury’s speed. In effect, Shazam gains Superman-like abilities like as super-strength, invulnerability, and flight.

He also has a number of magical abilities, including the power to create lightning and solve tough puzzles and codes in a couple of seconds. Basically, unless his adversaries can trick Shazam into transforming back into ordinary Billy Batson, he’s an invincible one-man army.
