Charles
Malcolm McDowell, better known as Charlie McDowell, is an American film director and writer. He is most known for
his film “The One I Love”. He married his longtime partner actress Lily Collins
earlier this week.

McDowell was
born on July 10, 1983, in
Los Angeles, California to Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen. Both his
parents are actors by profession. McDowell dated actress Rooney Mara
from 2010 to 2016. He then dated Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke from
2018 to 2019. In 2019, Charlie began a relationship with actress Lily Collins,
who is the daughter of English drummer and singer Phil Collins. Their
engagement was announced in September 2020 and had their wedding on September
4, 2021.

He made his
directorial debut with “The One I Love”. The movie starred Mark Duplass and
Elisabeth Moss and had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in
January 2014. Shortly after the premiere, the movie was acquired by RADiUS-TWC
and released in August 2014. In 2015, McDowell directed Sarah Silverman’s
untitled HBO series pilot but the project was junked by the network. He then
directed “The Discovery”, starring his former partner Rooney Mara, Jason Segel,
and Robert Redford. The film too premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and
was acquired by Netflix for a global release in 2017.

McDowell
announced in 2017 that he was adapting author Don DeLillo’s novel Zero K as a
limited series for FX. The series was produced by Noah Hawley and Scott Rudin.
McDowell had previously worked for FX, directing an episode of Hawley’s TV
series Legion.

In 2019,
McDowell directed the first and last episodes of the Showtime series On
Becoming a God in Central Florida and also served as an executive producer. He
also directed episodes of Silicon Valley, Dear White People, Tales from the
Loop and Dispatches from Elsewhere.
