Malayalee director and entrepreneur Dr KS Sohan Roy received the %u2018Better World Fund Unity Award%u2019 at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival 2021. He got the award for his directorial documentary “Black Sand” that talks about the environmental degradation and unscientific mining methods adopted in Alappuzha’s Alappad region.

He was presented the award on July 12 with other prominent Hollywood film personalities including Barry Alexander Brown, Spike Lee and Nabeel Ayush in the nominations list.

Sohan Roy won the award for Best Commitment and this is the first time an Indian has received this award. His Highness Prince Albert II, King of Monaco, and other famous Hollywood stars such as Forrest Whittaker, Sharon Stone and Wim Wanderers have won the Better World Fund Award in previous years, reports UNI.

%u201CI see this award as a recognition of the many activities that have been made over the past decade, including environmental awareness and film industry innovation. The humble efforts in this direction will continue,%u201D said Sohan Roy after the awards ceremony.

His documentary %u2018Black Sand%u2019, a documentary on unscientific mining and environmental exploitation in Alappuzha, Kerala, has won fourteen awards in three months, including being shortlisted for the Oscars. Famous footballer I.M. Environmental protection is also the theme of his film %u2018Mm %u2013 Sound of Pain%u2019 starring Vijayan. The film also deeply marks environmental issues, including climate change.

Previously, he has also directed a documentary, %u2018Dams %u2013 The Lethal Water Bombs%u2019, which tells the story of one of the worst natural disasters in the world. It has won over 23 awards along with an Oscar nomination.

The director is also an entrepreneur who has succeeded in eco-friendly ventures. He is also the Chairman and CEO of C.E. Aries Green Solutions, one of the initiatives of the Aries Group that has made significant strides in the field of environment.
