Frank Ocean has recently promoted a series of products through his Homer brand, including a $25k cock ring. The 34-year-old has transcended the boundaries of being a musician and has become somewhat of a myth over the course of a very fascinating career.

Born Christopher Edwin Breaux in Long Beach, California, on October 28, 1987, the artist later changed his name to Christopher Francis Ocean, via a legal site.

Ocean’s been part of the hip-hop collective Odd Future (OFWGKTA). Starting out, he worked odd jobs at places like FatBurger and Subway, while also building a reputation as a songwriter, landing on albums by artists like Justin Bieber and John Legend

In January 2010, he signed on with major record label Def Jam, who just shelved the artist without investing in his growth. Not one to go gently into the good night, Ocean quietly released his own debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra and released it online for free in 2011.

The underground hit was enough to draw appreciation from Beyonce, who got Ocean to work on her album 4. He also collaborated with Kanye West and Jay-Z, reportedly writing the hook for No Church in the Wild. With Ocean setting himself apart from the rest, the artist got the necessary leverage with Def Jam to have creative control over his next release Channel Orange.

Days before it dropped, the singer came out as queer, noting that the main source of inspiration was his first love, a man. Defined as genre-bending, the album indicated a shift in the musical landscape and paved the way for many young artists. Frank Ocean walked so Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish could run.

All the usual grandeur followed, the late night tv show appearances and even a Grammy win, but then Ocean disappeared from the public eye for about four years. He dropped Endless on Apple Music and ended his contract with Def Jam. Though the artist and the record label had started to get along better, Ocean said he played a seven-year chess game to exit Def Jam.

Then he released Blonde under the independent label Boys Don’t Cry. It reached even newer heights, but since then, the artist has only released singles and revealed recently that he’s back in the studio. Ocean is also in talks to direct his first feature film that’ll be produced by A24.

While Ocean’s family had moved to New Orleans, the artist was evacuated from the university there, when hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. He was transported to Los Angeles, where he remained to pursue his musical career.
