Japanese composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto died at the age of 71 after battling cancer.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of artist and musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto, on the 28th of March, 2023,” his management company KAB America Inc said. “While undergoing treatment for cancer discovered in June 2020, Sakamoto continued to create works in his home studio whenever his health would allow. He lived with music until the very end. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to his fans and all those who have supported his activities, as well as the medical professionals in Japan and the U.S. who did everything in their power to cure him.”

Who is Miu Sakamoto?

Among his 4 children, the most well-known is Miu Sakamoto, whom he shared with his second wife, popular Japanese pianist, and singer Akiko Yano. Ryuichi married Yano in 1982, following several musical collaborations with her. She also toured with his band, Yellow Magic Orchestra on multiple occasions. 14 years after the couple decided to live separately, they ended their relationship in a divorce in August 2006,

Miu Sakamoto is a Japanese pop singer. She provided the cover of Miu, Buck-Tick tribute album Parade III ~Respective Tracks of Buck-Tick which was released on January 29, 2020. Some of her albums include DAWN PINK (September 29, 1999), Harmonious (May 24, 2006), Oboro no Kanata, Akari no Kehai (December 12, 2007), Zoy (November 5, 2008), and PHANTOM Girl (May 19, 2010).

Like her father, she has also written and composed many singles like In Aquascape (September 8, 1999), I’ll believe the look in your eyes (February 9, 2000), beautiful (July 26, 2000), Blank (April 11, 2001) and 15fun (May 23, 2001).

Miu has provided her voice for Yamaha’s Vocaloid Mew. Her first single, Line debuted in The Vocaloid. The album was produced by Yamaha.
