Actress Jane Fonda has announced on Instagram that she has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, for which she has already started chemotherapy. The legendary actress, 84, also said that she is thankful this form of cancer is treatable, with 80% of people who get the disease surviving. She continued saying that she will have to take chemotherapy for a period of six months and would not let this disease interfere with her climate activism in any way.

Who is Jane Fonda?

Jane Fonda is an American actor and social activist who has won a number of awards and accolades for her film performances. She is the daughter of noted Hollywood actor Henry Fonda and the sister of New Hollywood pioneer, Peter Fonda. She was born in New York City on December 21, 1937. Before becoming an actor, Fonda pursued modelling and had featured on two Vogue magazine covers.

She began pursuing acting after meeting Lee Strasbourg and enrolling in the Actors Studio. Her first film, Tall Story, released in 1960 where she acted alongside Anthony Perkins (of Psycho fame). Fonda’s performance in the 1962 film Walk on The Wild Side helped her garner a Golden Globe Award as the Most Promising Newcomer.

Some of the Fonda’s most iconic films include They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Klute, The Morning After, and Coming Home. She was a part of the film Tout Va Bien directed by French New Wave icon Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin. Fonda reportedly turned down offers to portray the lead character in films like Rosemary’s Baby and Bonnie and Clyde.

Throughout her career, Fonda has been linked with a number of film and media personalities like Kris Kristofferson, Alain Delon, Mick Jagger, and others. She married thrice and has three children. Her third husband was Ted Turner, the founder of CNN.

The 84-year-old was honoured with two Academy Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, two BAFTA Awards, an honorary Palme d’Or, as well as the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
