Who is Jeff Dunham?

Jeffrey Douglas Dunham, an American ventriloquist, stand-up comedian, and actor, was born on April 18, 1962.

Dunham was born in the Texas city of Dallas. He was adopted when he was three months old by real estate appraiser Howard Dunham and his homemaker wife Joyce, who raised him as an only child in a devoutly Presbyterian household in an affluent Dallas neighborhood.

His parents gave him a Mortimer Snerd dummy and an accompanying how-to album for Christmas in 1970, when he was eight years old.

Dunham has also made appearances on a number of television programmes, including The Tonight Show, Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central Presents, and Sonny with a Chance.

Arguing with Myself, Spark of Insanity, Jeff Dunham’s Very Special Christmas Special, Controlled Chaos, Minding the Monsters, and All Over the Map are his six Comedy Central specials. Dunham also appeared in The Jeff Dunham Show, a 2009 series on the network.

His persona has been described as “a dressed-down, more digestible Don Rickles with multiple personality disorder.” His characters were described as “politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting, and ill-tempered” by Time. Dunham is credited with reviving ventriloquism and promoting the art form more than anyone since Edgar Bergen.

Slate has referred to Dunham as “America’s favourite comedian.” He is the highest-grossing stand-up artist in North America and among the most popular acts worldwide, according the concert industry newspaper Pollstar.

The DVD for A Very Special Christmas Special sold over 400,000 copies in its first two weeks, making it the most-watched telecast in Comedy Central history.

Forbes ranked Dunham as the third highest-paid comedian in the United States, trailing only Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock, and reported that he was one of the highest-earning comics from June 2008 to June 2009, earning around $30 million. Dunham also takes on occasional acting roles. For his Spark of Insanity tour, he set the Guinness World Record for “Most tickets sold for a stand-up comedy tour,” performing in 386 venues around the world.
