The 80th Golden Globe Awards, which will air on NBC next month, will be hosted by Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael. According to Variety, NBC, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and telecast producer Dick Clark Productions planned to reveal Carmichael on Thursday.

Who is Jerrod Carmichael?

Rothaniel Jerrod Carmichael is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker. On April 6, 1987, Carmichael was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His elder brother is called Joe.

Carmichael’s upbringing in poverty is a recurring theme in his stand-up comedy. He was the host of a morning news programme for his primary school’s local access channel in fifth grade. He obtained his high school diploma from Kernersville, North Carolina’s Robert B. Glenn High School in 2005. Sinbad, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin were some of his earliest comedic role models.

Three stand-up comedy specials featuring him have been made available on HBO: Love at the Store (2014), 8 (2017), and Rothaniel (2022). Additionally, he co-created, co-wrote, produced, and acted in the NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show (2015–2017), which was loosely based on his life. On the Count of Three (2021) was directed, and produced by Carmichael, in which he also starred. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2022 for writing Rothaniel and received one that year for hosting Saturday Night Live as a guest.

Carmichael resides currently in New York City. Throughout the course of his documentary series Home Videos (2019), he has spoken about his relationships with both men and women.  In his comedy special, Rothaniel (2022), he came out as gay.
