Who is Johnny McDaid?

John McDaid is a singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer from Northern Ireland. He co-wrote songs with Ed Sheeran, P!nk, and Robbie Williams in addition to being a part of the band Snow Patrol.

In 2013, Cox and McDaid started dating after being introduced by a common friend, Ed Sheeran. Early in 2015, they announced their engagement, however, they later broke it off. The following year, they reconnected.

The beginning of the COVID-19 epidemic compelled the couple to date remotely. While McDaid, a native of Northern Ireland, remained in Europe, Cox was in California.

On McDaid’s left arm, there is a tattoo that reads ‘Nuair is gá dom filleadh abhaile, is tú mo réalt eolais’ which translates into ‘When I need to get home you’re my guiding light’.

This is an Irish translation of Northern Irish musician Foy Vance’s song “Guiding Light.” The same tattoo is shared by Vance, McDaid’s younger sister Maev, and Ed Sheeran. The song was composed in memory of John McDaid Sr., who passed away in July 2011.

In January 2022, Cox spoke about McDaid to PEOPLE stating, “He’s a great listener. And I’ve never met someone more patient. He’s a great advice-giver. I love his heart, his intentions. His morals. He’s extremely talented and obviously musical, but he’s a poet and a writer. He’s just so smart, and I find that really sexy. And then he is gorgeous.”

McDaid feels the same way. “My thoughts are never without Court,” he told PEOPLE in October 2018. “She’s my best friend. She’s my partner, in everything. When I write her poems, it’s just an extension of how I feel every second anyway.”

Cox’s daughter Coco, whom she had with her ex-husband David Arquette, is also said to be close with the Irish artist.
