Christopher Comstock who goes by the stage name Marshmello is an American electronic music producer and DJ. 

At this year’s version of the MTV Video Music Awards, Marshmello has been nominated to win thanks to his single Numb, which he created with his long-time collaborator Khalid. The nomination at the VMAs comes under the Song of Summer category. 

The two even performed Numb in front of an ecstatic Sunday crowd at the award show. Marshmello pulled up to the stage in a lime green tracksuit outfit while Khalid emerged from the crowd wearing a black and turquoise blue ensemble.

Who is Marshmello?

Born on May 19, 1992 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Comstock aka Marshmello shot to prominence in 2015 after he posted numerous electronic music mixes online. His popularity grew after popular Electronic dance music producer Skrillex reposted his remixes. 

Marshmello released his first studio album, Joytime, in 2016. It contained 10 songs. After its release, the album peaked at number 5 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic songs chart and at number 14 on the US Heatseeker albums as well as number 41 on the Independent Albums chart. 

From 2016 onwards the musician’s rise in fame was meteoric, as he went on to perform at several venues, even announcing tours across the United States. In 2017, his song Silence with Khalid topped dance charts in Australia, the United Kingdom and the US, while also being part of the top 10 of nearly 15 countries.

He has released four studio albums so far, Joytime (2016); Joytime II (2018); Joytime III (2019) and Shockwave (2021). He has been nominated for awards 21 times and has won six of them. He won his first MTV Europe Music Awards title in 2018 under the Best Electronic category. 

The electronic music producer had initially wanted to keep his identity under wraps and would wear a headgear resembling a marshmallow for public appearances and in his music videos. His identity became public in 2017 after Forbes magazine discovered that Marshmello and Skrillex used the same manager, the fact that Skrillex had called him Chris in an interview and the tattoos and birthdays that aligned with that of Chris Comstock. According to the 30-year-old, his headgear was based off of other music producers like DeadMau5 and the duo Daft Punk.
