Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a 2022 American film written and directed by Rian Johnson. The movie premiered at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2022. The movie is scheduled to make a theatrical release in November 2022. It will be released on Netflix on December 23, 2022. 

Rian Johnson introduced the movie at the Princes of Wales Theater and said, “This movie, above everything else, is designed to be a good time with a big crowd of folks in a theater.” The Last Jedi director also added, “The title has an oddness to it that reminds me of 70s paperbacks or even some Agatha Christie titles. There’s a pleasant oddball-ness to calling a big movie Glass Onion.”

Who is Rian Johnson?

Rian Craig Johnson is an American filmmaker. He was born on December 17, 1973, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Prior to moving to San Clemente, California in the sixth grade, he spent his formative years in Denver, Colorado. 

He attended San Clemente High School and graduated in 1992. He studied at the University of Southern California, where he earned his degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1996. His film Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!!!, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart was included as an easter egg on the looper Blu-ray. 

His debut movie Brick, a crime drama, was released in 2005. The movie was released on DVD by Focus Features and is classified as film noir. The movie was screened in New York City, Chicago, Seattle, and Portland. It was released as a limited edition DVD on Record Store Day. He directed the video for the Mountain Goats’ song Woke Up New in 2006. Johnson also directed a live performance film of the Mountain Goats’ 2009 album The Life of the World to Come.

Johnson’s second movie, The Brothers Bloom was released in 2009. In May 2010, Johnson revealed that he would be directing an episode of the third season of the television series Breaking Bad. He won a Directors Guild of America Award for directing the second episode of the show, which aired on August 5, 2012. 

His third movie Looper was released on September 28, 2012. The movie was a success at the box office. Johnson wrote and directed the eighth installment in the Star Wars film series. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released on December 15, 2017. As per reports, Johnson turned down an offer from Lucasfilm to write and direct the follow-up to The Last Jedi. 

Following The Last Jedi, Johnson released Knives Out on November 27, 2019. The murder mystery starred Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, and Christopher Plummer. The movie was a major success and grossed $300 million at the box office worldwide. The movie earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Johnson and producer Ram Bergman launched a company, T-Street, in 2019, to create original content for films and TV shows. Johnson directed a commercial for the mobile video game Pokemon Go in 2020.
