Shania Twain, 57, is set to be honoured with the Music Icon award at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards. Twain is one of the best-selling musical artists in history, and the best-selling female country music artist of all time.

The veteran singer recently opened up about being sexually abused by her stepfather in an interview with The Times. “I hid myself and I would flatten my boobs,” the singer said, further adding, “I would wear bras that were too small for me, and I’d wear two, play it down until there was nothing girl about me. Make it easier to go unnoticed. Because, oh my gosh, it was terrible – you didn’t want to be a girl in my house.”

Who is Shania Twain?

Shania Twain was born on August 28, 1965 in Windsor, Ontario. Her birth name is Eilleen Regina Edwards. She is the daughter of Sharon and Clarence Edwards. The singer has two sisters- Carrie Ann and Jill.

Twain was two when her parents divorced. She then began living with her mother’s new husband, Jerry Twain, along with her sisters. 

The singer has earlier claimed that Jerry “went out of his way to raise three daughters that weren’t even his”. She has, however, recently opened up about being sexually abused by Jerry as a child.

Twain began her career when she was only eight years old. She sang in bars in order to provide for her family. She performed on the Tommy Hunter Show at the age of 13.

In 1983, Twain began performing with a Diane Chase-led cover band. Her first album, Shania Twain, was released in 1993. This was followed by the release of The Woman in Me in 1995, Come On Over in 1997, Up! in 2002, and Now in 2017.

Twain’s first major success was Come On Over, which reached a peak position of #2 on the Billboard chart. The veteran singer is set to release her upcoming album, Queen of Me, on February 3, 2023.

Besides her musical career, Twain has often appeared on a number of reality TV shows and films.
