Tollywood fans were shocked when news broke out that superstar Mahesh Babu’s mother and former wife of veteran actor Krishna, Indira Devi died on September 28 in Hyderabad owing to poor health. She died at 4 am IST on Wednesday, September 28, at AIG Hospital in Hyderabad, where she was admitted for illness. 

Apart from being the mother of southern superstar Mahesh Babu, Indira Devi was also the wife of veteran Telugu actor Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna Murthy, popularly known as Krishna. The seasoned actor has been one of the most crucial people associated with the rise of Tollywood and has won several awards in his long career that has spanned more than 50 years.

Who is Krishna?

Ghattamaneni Siva Rama Krishna Murthy, popularly known as Krishna, was born on May 31, 1943, in Burripalem, Guntur district, of modern-day Andhra Pradesh to Ghattamaneni Raghavayya Chowdary and Nagaratnamma. He is a former actor, director and producer who worked primarily in the Telugu film industry.

Krishna married Indira Devi, and later Vijaya Nirmala. He has five children with Indira Devi, two sons and three daughters, including Ramesh Babu and Mahesh Babu.

His career in the film industry has spanned over five decades, beginning with the 1965 film Thene Manasulu. Since then, he has acted in more than 300 films, winning several awards, including the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South in 1997, NTR National Award in 2003, the Padma Bhushan in 2009 and an honorary doctorate by the University of Andhra Pradesh in 2008.

Krishna is popularly called the superstar by the fans of Telugu cinema. He became a Member of Parliament for the Indian National Congress in 1989. 

One of the highest-paid actors during his career, some of Krishna’s most popular films are Saakshi, Pandanti Kapuram, Alluri Seetharama Raju, James Bond 777 and Gudachari 117. He has also directed and produced many films in his career, including Shankharavam, Koduku Diddina Kapuram and Anna Thammudu.
