Renowned vocalist and performer Tina Turner passed away at 83 after suffering from a long illness in her home in Kusnacht, Switzerland.

Who was Ike Turner?

Ike Turner was the first husband of Tina Turner. He was an American musician, songwriter, and record producer. He was well known in the 1950s rock and roll circle. He was famous for his work with his then-wife Tina Turner in the 60s and 70s as the leader of the Ike and Turner Revue.

Ike was a native of Clarksdale, Mississippi. He began playing guitar and piano at a very young age and formed a band “Kings of Rhythm” as a teenager. Ike is considered a pioneer of Rock N Roll as his first song is considered a distinction of the genre.

After his divorce from Tina, singer Holly Maxwell performed with Turner on several occasions between 1977 and 1985, and again for eight months in 1992. She stated that she had a good working relationship with Turner and later published the memoir Freebase. They’re not free about their close friendship.

Ike’s drug addiction and legal issues, with Tina Turner’s accusation of domestic violence, soon impacted his career in the 1980s and 90s. He was addicted to cocaine for over 15 years and served 18 months of jail time after he was convicted of drug offenses. Turner died at the age of 76 due to a drug overdose in 2007.

His contribution to the field of Rock N Roll was highly acclaimed and won five Grammy Awards. In 1991, he was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Tina Turner.
