“The world lost a magnificent man on July 5. Brother Len was passionate about everything and everyone,” she said.

Von Dohlen grew up in Goliad, a small town in south Texas, after being born in Augusta, Georgia. From his father’s side, he has German ancestors. He wanted to be a jockey as a boy, but grew too tall for his dream. He studied theatre at the University of Texas and received his bachelor’s degree from Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado.

He then relocated to New York City to seek a career on the stage, stating in an interview, “I knew I wanted to go to New York City to work in the theater … so I rid myself of my Texas accent by listening to John Gielgud records. Then, after I got to NYC, the first film I was offered was to play the leader of a country & western band in Texas. Ahh, irony.”
