Peter Thomas Scolari was an American actor, best known for
his roles as Michael Harris on “Newhart” and Henry Desmond in “Bosom Buddies” opposite
Tom Hanks. Scolari died on Friday after a prolonged battle with cancer at the
age of 66.
Scolari was born in New Rochelle, New York on September 12, 1955, and got his first major acting role in
the short-lived 1980 ABC comedy “Goodtime Girls”. He then stared in “Bosom Buddies”
later that year with Hanks, playing two guys who disguise themselves as women
to live in an affordable, all-female apartment building. He has been a lifelong
friend of the acclaimed actor.
Talking about his childhood, Scolari described his father as
an abusive, “rageful man”, and his mother as an alcoholic, and has
said that their marriage was not that smooth. He told The Toronto Star in an
interview that his parents ” stayed together for the kids and also because
they were hopelessly in love with each other, but they were totally
incompatible.”
Scolari had three Emmy nominations to his name for his work
on “Newhart” but he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a
Comedy Series for his recurring role as Tad Horvath on “Girls” in 2016.
In recent years, Scolari was seen on the CBS turned
Paramount+ drama “Evil”. He also appeared on many series including Fox’s “Gotham”,
FX’s “Fosse/Verdon “and Lisey’s Story at Apple TV+.
He also appeared as an actor on stage on Broadway. He has
been credited for playing stage roles in “Wicked”, “Hairspray” and the play “Lucky
Guy”, which was also his reunion with
his friend Tom Hanks.
Scolari left behind his wife, Tracy Shayne, and children
Nicholas, Joseph, Keaton, and Cali. His previous marriages were with Debra
Steagal and Cathy Trien.
