Hollywood actor Philip Baker Hall died at the age of 90 on Sunday night in Glendale, California. 

His wife, Holly Wolfle Hall, said on Monday that the actor’s health deteriorated only recently, adding that he spent his last days with his close friends and family. 

“His voice at the end was still just as powerful,” said Wolfle Hall, according to AP. 

Announcing the news of Hall’s death, Sam Farmer, his friend and neighbour, wrote on Twitter, “My neighbor, friend, and one of the wisest, most talented and kindest people I’ve ever met, Philip Baker Hall, died peacefully last night. He was surrounded by loved ones. The world has an empty space in it.”

Early life 

Philip Baker Hall was born on September 10, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio. After attending the University of Toledo, Hall began working as a US Army translator and a high school educator in Germany.

Career

After setting foot in the industry with ‘Cowards’ in 1970, Hall starred in several television shows such as ‘Good Times’, ‘M*A*S*H’, and ‘Man from Atlantis’. Since the year 1977, he played more than 200 guest roles. Later on, he portrayed the character of Richard Nixon in ‘Secret Honor’ (1984). 

In the 80s, he appeared in films like ‘Midnight Run’, ‘Say Anything…’,  ‘Nothing in Common’ and ‘Ghostbusters II’.

Hall rose to prominence for his appearance on two ‘Seinfield’ episodes, and later bagged roles in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Cigarettes & Coffee’, ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Magnolia’. 

In the 2000s, he starred in ‘The Truman Show’, ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’, ‘Zodiac’ and ‘Bruce Almighty’. He also played the role of a grumpy neighbor on ‘Modern Family’.

Familial life 

After having two children with Dianne Lewis, his first partner, Hall parted ways and went on to marry Holly Wolfle. Hall had two daughters, Adella and Anna, with his second wife.
