Richard Roat, a well-known character actor with more than 135 TV and movie credits, passed away at the age of 89.

According to an obituary that appeared in the Los Angeles Times this week, Roat passed away on August 5.

Who was Richard Roat?

Roat, who was born in Connecticut in 1933, gave performances on Broadway, at the Pasadena Playhouse, the Huntington Hartford Theatre in Los Angeles, and the Public Theatre in Central Park. He enjoyed drinking whiskey, playing the violin, and listening to music, according to his obituary. He shared his passion for sports and supported the Los Angeles Lakers and Angels.

When not working as an actor, Roat ran Richard Roat Associates with his wife, Kathy, and prepared taxes for many people in the entertainment world.

Over the past six decades, he had made several appearances on well-known programmes and sitcoms, beginning with a role in Car 54, Where Are You? in 1962.

Roat has since had appearances on a number of television shows, including Hawaii Five-O, Columbo, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Happy Days, Dallas, and Friends. He has also had recurrent parts in several soap operas, including The Doctors, Generations, and Days of Our Lives.

He played Dr. Berg on Seinfeld opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the Season 8 episode The Package, when he called Elaine, played by Dreyfus, a “difficult patient.” He portrayed Burt in the television series Friends, a worried coworker who outed Ross for dating a student.

Roat made guest appearances on several sitcoms in the 1990s, including Ellen, 7th Heaven, 3rd Rock From the Sun, and Mad About You. Roat scored parts in 24 and Cold Case toward the conclusion of his acting career.
