Colin Farrell plays Oswald Cobblepot or Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. He recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about hopes for Penguin to be in the Batman sequel too.

“Oh my god, you kidding me?!”, he asked rhetorically whether the actor would reprise the part on the big screen. “It’s so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I’ve been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean… it was a joy”, the 46-year-old continued.

A spinoff with the Gotham crime boss is already in the works and the Irish actor said he hopes filming for the HBO Max series will begin in 2023.

He added, “Matt’s up to his bollocks, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he’s just so meticulous. He’s so obsessive about what he does, but he’s all over [HBO Max’s] Penguin [series] as well. I mean, he’s not gonna direct it but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s gonna direct them. And so, it’s exciting.”

There’s been a delay in filming since Farrell’s new science fiction project, Sugar, for Apple TV, starts production this month and will carry on till fall. The actor can also be seen in Thirteen Lives, the Ron Howard movie, which is in theatres now and will be available on Prime Video on August 5.

When the Penguin spinoff was announced, Farrell had said “The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot. I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”
