Chennai, Oct 2 (PTI): Commemorating Mahatma Gandhi's 152nd birth anniversary and 75 years of the nation attaining independence, Southern Railway has set up an exclusive section in the heritage photo gallery at its headquarters here featuring iconic rail journey taken up by the father of the nation.
Southern Railway General Manager John Thomas administered the Swachhata (cleanliness) pledge to the officers and staff following the culmination of 'Swachhata Pakhwada', a fortnight long cleanliness drive.
"Signifying 75 years of Independent India and 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, an exclusive section of historic rail journey's undertaken by Gandhi has been displayed at the heritage photo gallery at the southern railway headquarters," a press release said.
Vintage photographs of Gandhi's rail travel across Southern India and other important destinations during the freedom struggle have been exhibited, Thomas said, after paying floral tributes to Gandhi. He recalled the impact of Gandhi's rail journeys on freedom struggle and how his journey imbibed the spirit of patriotism among the people. Thomas appreciated the concerted efforts of the officers and staff of Southern Railway in organising extensive cleanliness drive all over southern zone.
He accorded a special mention on Coimbatore juncture having been awarded the platinum rating from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
Meanwhile, commemorating Gandhi Jayanti, a special train hauled by a vintage oil-fired steam loco was run between Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam today. Rail enthusiasts and tourists experienced the rail journey in the UNESCO-listed Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR), known for its steep gradients and unique rack and pinion system, the release said.
The heritage photo gallery inaugurated in January 2019 has on display the NMR, Pamban Brdige and the Sengottai-Punalur section, besides photographs of vintage locos, signalling equipment, brass bells, heritage buildings and a century-old cash chest, the release added.
