Fans clash ahead of Man United’s Premier League opener vs Leeds | Watch
- Manchester United host Leeds United in their opening fixture in the Premier League season
- Jadon Sancho has been named on the bench for this match
- Man United won 6-2 in the same fixture last year
The return of fans in the stadiums, for the first time in 18 months, was a breath of fresh air for the Premier League on its opening day on Friday, as an electric Brentford Community Stadium acted as the 12th man in the Bees’ 2-0 win over Arsenal.
However, the return of fans also brings back some ugly scenes, as was evident in the Euro 2020 final and is sort of traditional among English football fans. Ahead of Manchester United’s opening clash against Leeds United, fans of the two bitter rivals clashed in the city centre.
Watch the fans go on rampage in Manchester here:
Meanwhile, Leeds posted a video of Old Trafford faithfuls singing "We all hate Leeds scum". "Missed us #MUFC fans?" the video was captioned.
United will look to get off the ideal start in their quest for a first Premier League title since 2013 with three points against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will take heart from the same fixture last December, when the Red Devils won 6-2. Scott McTominay scored twice within three minutes, with a double from Bruno Fernandes as well as goals from Daniel James and Victor Lindelof helping seal a famous win.
The Norwegian manager has named summer signing Jadon Sancho on the bench for the fixture. With Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani sidelined due to injury, young striker Mason Greenwood got the nod to start up front.
He will be flanked by Daniel James on the left, with Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Fred all included in the starting lineup.
Here are the starting XIs for both teams:
Manchester United have spent big in the summer transfer window this season to bolster key positions - Sancho on the right wing and Raphael Varane at centre-back.
Solskjaer, in his third full season at the helm at Old Trafford, will be hoping to break his trophy duck. Last season, he reached a cup final for the first time, but lost to Villarreal on penaties in the Europa League final.
