Animal Rebellion, an animal and climate justice organisation, said demonstrators were blockading four McDonald’s distribution centres in the United Kingdom on Saturday to pressure the restaurant giant into switching to plant-based foods by 2025.

The Animal Rebellion movement said they planned to shut down distribution centres in England’s Hemel Hempstead, Basingstoke, Coventry, and Greater Manchester for at least a day.

According to the group, about 50 protesters used trucks and bamboo structures to block lorries from exiting McDonald’s four distribution centres in Britain.

McDonald’s reported that some of the delivery centres are now experiencing problems. McDonald’s UK apologised to its customers via a spokesperson for the disruption.

“We are assessing the impact on deliveries to our restaurants and to menu items,” she said.

The group said it would remain at the sites for at least 24 hours to disrupt the company’s supply chain.

“The meat and dairy industry is destroying our planet: causing huge amounts of rainforest deforestation, emitting immense quantities of greenhouse gases and killing billions of animals each year,” said James Ozden, a spokesperson for Animal Rebellion, as quoted by Reuters.

Coventry Police said that although they respect the right of activists to a peaceful demonstration, security issues have arisen because the only entrance and exit point of the distribution center has been blocked and the businesses are severely disrupted.
