Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi's first picture in police custody emerges
- Mehul Choksi is under the Dominican police's custody
- On Saturday, a Dominican court extended its order to restrain his repatriation back to India
- The next hearing is set to take place on Wednesday
Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi was nabbed by the police in Dominica this week and his first pictures since then were shared by the news agency ANI. Choksi is in the custody of the Dominican police and the court has extended its order to restrain his repatriation back to India.
An earlier order from the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Dominica also stayed Choksi’s deportation.
The next ruling for Choksi is set to take place on Wednesday, where the court will be hearing a habeas corpus plea filed by him and deciding whether the detention of the business tycoon is lawful.
Choksi, who had been living in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda in recent years, had attempted an escape from the country on Sunday, prompting a manhunt.
After his eventual capture in the neighbouring country of Dominican Republic, Antigua refused to take him back, with Antiguan Prime Minister Gaston Browne subsequently saying that he was in conversation with both the Dominican and Indian governments for Choksi’s repatriation.
The diamantaire, his nephew Nirav Modi and several others are accused in a case of fraudulent transactions with the state-owned Punjab National Bank, which resulted in a loss of about Rs 14,000 crore for the bank.
While hearings regarding Choksi’s extradition have commenced in Dominica, Modi was arrested in London in 2019.
