Union Home Minister Amit Shah took stock of the COVID-19 situation in the capital city of New Delhi on Sunday, following the sharp rise in coronavirus cases, reported PTI quoting officials. Delhi had recorded 7,340 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours since Friday and had also posted a record high-spike of 8,593 cases on Wednesday. 

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain and senior officers of the central government were present for the meeting chaired by Amit Shah.

The Home Minister reviewed the situation and discussed ways to deal with the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the city, a home ministry official stated.

Delhi recorded 3,235 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours since Saturday, taking the infection tally of total cases recorded in the union territory to 4.85 lakhs.

95 deaths were also recorded in the last 24 hours and the death toll from the novel coronavirus that originated from Wuhan, China now stands at 7,614.

The meeting was convened to discuss and devise a strategy to curtail the spread of the novel virus in the city, keeping in mind the rising pollution levels and decreasing temperatures, the official added.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has blamed pollution for the spike in coronavirus cases, while Union Health Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla had attributed the third surge in COVID-19 cases in the capital city to laxity in adhering COVID guidelines during the festival season of Durga Puja and Diwali.

The National Centre for Disease Control in its latest report had also warned Delhi, asking it to prepare for about 15,000 COVID-19 cases per day.
