Argentina secured their spot in the quarterfinal of Copa America after winning 1-0 over Paraguay at Estadio Nacional de Brasilia. Argentina also held on to their top spot in Group A and maintained their unbeaten record in the competition. It was Alejandro Dario Gomez who gave Argentina the lead in the 10th minute. Argentina, with seven points from three games, qualify to the next round with a game in hand.

It was an early lead for Lionel Scaloni’s men that set the tone for the rest of the game. There were hints of offside in the build-up to the goal as Lionel Messi was found behind the backline. But officials deemed that the Argentine skipper had not impeded the play. Angel Di Maria weighted pass into the box saw Gomez put the ball into the net.

Argentina had a total of eight shots, of which four were on target. They committed 11 fouls, and their midfielder Leandro Paredes was the only player from the side who went into the referee’s book.

Paraguay had two out of 10 shots on target. They had a majority of the possession with 57% and 513 completed passes. They committed 23 fouls, and Gustavo Gomez and Angel Cardozo Lucena were the two players from the side who received yellow cards.

Paraguay are currently third on the group table and are still in the hunt for a spot in the next round, as the top four teams get the qualification.
