The upcoming Asian games 2022 have been postponed citing Covid-19 fears, Chinese state media said. Initially, the games were scheduled to take place from September 10 to September 25. With China striving to manage a new wave of Covid-19 outbreak, the games have been postponed.

However, the officials have not revealed the revised date for the tournament. The Chinese state media confirmed the Games’ postponement, citing the Olympic Council of Asia. Though it is understandable that the postponement took place amid the rising Covid-19 fears in the country, no official reason was given for the delay.

Earlier, Tokyo Olympics 2020 were also postponed by a year after the Covid-19 pandemic first started to spread all across the world. However, just a year later, the Games were successfully hosted in 2021 in Tokyo.

Recently, it was reported that postponing the Asian Games, which is second only to the Olympics in terms of the number of participants, was becoming a possibility because of the rising threat of Covid-19 in the country.

This is the number of infections that China is presently dealing with is the highest it has ever witnessed.

A record number of daily cases in Shanghai have been emerging, with the city going into a strict lockdown for over a month. The venue for the Asian Games, Hangzhou, is only a short train ride away from Shanghai.
