The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is self-isolating after she came in contact with a person who later tested positive for COVID-19, Britain’s Kensington Palace said on Monday. She was last seen on Friday at the Wimbledon tennis championships.

As per a royal statement, the wife of Prince William was “not experiencing any symptoms but is following all relevant government guidelines and is self-isolating at home.”

The 39-year-old royal was due to attend a thanksgiving service on Monday to mark 73 years since the founding of Britain’s National Health Service. She was also scheduled to host NHS workers at Queen Elizabeth II’s Buckingham Palace home in central London.

The news of Kate Middleton isolating comes at a time when the United Kingdom prepares to lift COVID restrictions from July 19.

Prince Charles, Kate’s father-in-law, had tested positive for COVID-19 in March 2020. Prince William revealed in November, last year that he had contracted the novel coronavirus in April, not long after his father had tested positive. 

Meanwhile, the UK that has battled with three waves of the coronavirus pandemic is set to reopen. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday unveiled a plan to lift most if not all of England’s pandemic restrictions from July 19. Although the government was set to reopen completely by June 21 but was forced to push back the date because of a surge of Delta variant of COVID-19.

The country is one of the worst-hit in Europe. It has recorded more than 4.9 million COVID-19 cases and 128,486 deaths.
