US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus, the President said in a tweet on Friday.

“We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” he tweeted.

Earlier on Friday, Trump had announced that he and the First Lady would begin their quarantine after his close aide Hope Hicks tested positive for COVID-19.

“Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!” Trump said in a tweet.

Hicks traveled with the President on Air Force One this Tuesday to fly to Cleveland for the first presidential debate with Democrat Joe Biden.

She was also with him on the Marine One helicopter Wednesday when he flew back to the White House after a rally in Minnesota.

In February this year, Hicks was appointed as an aide to Trump’s son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner. She is also serving as a counselor to Trump.

She earlier served as the White House director of strategic communication, followed by her stint as the interim communications director.

Trump has often downplayed the risks of the novel coronavirus. Apart from touting unproven remedies for the disease, the President is hardly seen wearing a mask in public.
