India recorded 332,730 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the nation’s COVID-19 tally to 16,263,695. A total of 2,263 people died across the nation from COVID-related complications. The death toll from COVID-19 in India now stands at 186,920.

There are currently 2,428,616 active cases of coronavirus in the nation. A total of 193,279 people recovered from the COVID-19 disease in the country, taking the tally of recovered or discharged cases in India to 13,648,159.

India is witnessing a lethal second wave of COVID-19, as with record daily spike, hospitals across the nation are reporting a shortage of oxygen cylinders, beds, whether normal or ICU, and medicines. The country, now the second worst-hit globally by the pandemic, has overtaken Brazil and the US in the number of daily cases.

Since the vaccination drive against COVID-19 was kicked off in India on January 16, over 135,478,420 million people have received at least one of the two doses of vaccine. The Centre on Monday announced that those above 18 are eligible to get the COVID vaccine from May 1.

Currently, two vaccines — Covaxin and Covishield — are being administered in India. The former is the indigenous jab developed at Hyderabad’s Bharat biotech. Covishield is AstraZeneca/Oxford’s jab that is being manufactured at the Pune-based Serum Institute. A third vaccine, Russia’s Sputnik V, has also been approved by India’s drug regulator for emergency use.
