India recorded 39,070 new COVID-19 cases and 491 deaths in the last 24 hours, data from the Union Ministry of Health confirmed on Sunday. The country’s total infection tally now stands at 3,19,34,455, with the death toll pushed to 4,27,862. The fatality rate stands at 1.34%. 

Active cases fell by 5,331 to 4,06,822. They constitute 1.27% of the total cases. 43,910 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,10,99,771. The recovery rate currently stands at 97.39%.

The government administered a total of 55,91,657 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in the last 24 hours, with India’s total vaccination count currently at 50,68,10,492. 

Meanwhile, data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed a total of 17,22,221 samples were tested for COVID-19 on Saturday. A total of 48,00,39,185 samples have been tested so far, as of Saturday.

The weekly positivity rate currently stands at 2.68%, while the daily positivity rate has stayed below 3% for the last 13 days and is currently at 2.27%.  

India’s COVID-19 caseload crossed the 20 lakh-mark on August 7 last year, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one crore-mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4 and 3 crore on June 23 this year.

India’s death toll of over 4.27 lakh comprises 1,33,845 fatalities from Maharashtra, 36,773 from Karnataka, 34,289 from Tamil Nadu, 25,066 from Delhi and 22,773 from Uttar Pradesh. 

The government has maintained that over 70% of the deaths have occured due to comorbidities. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the health ministry said on its website.
