Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar has died, her sister Usha Mangeshkar told news agency PTI on Sunday. The singer, famously known as India’s nightingale, was admitted at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on January 8 after contracting COVID-19. She was also receiving treatment for pneumonia. 

“She is no more. She died in the morning,” Usha told PTI. 

A two-day national mourning has been declared following her death, with the national flag set to be hoisted at half-mast. 

The versatile singer was put back on ventilator support after her health deteriorated last night and was undergoing “aggressive therapy”, a doctor who was treating her said.

Following news of her worsening health, a number of celebrities as well as fans reached the hospital to check on the singer. Mangeshkar’s sister and fellow playback singer Asha Bhosle also arrived at the hospital last night.

Union minister Piyush Goyal, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and NCP leader Supriya Sule were also among the anxious visitors. 

Regarded as one of Indian cinema’s greatest playback singers, Mangeshkar started her career at the age of 13 in 1942 and has sung over 25,000 songs in at least 36 languages.

Following Mangeshkar‘s death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter to pay his condolences. 

“I consider it my honour that I have always received immense affection from Lata Didi. My interactions with her will remain unforgettable. I grieve with my fellow Indians on the passing away of Lata Didi. Spoke to her family and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”

In her over seven-decade career, she has sung a host of memorable tracks, including “Ajeeb dastan hai ye”, “Pyar kiya to darna kya” and “Neela asman so gaya”.

The singer has been awarded with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, as well as the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award.
