Maharashtra is India’s worst-affected state from the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting nearly half of the country’s daily cases amid an alarming recent spike in infections. The state has recorded 32,29,547 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, while over 57,000 people in the state have succumbed to the deadly virus. In view of the surge, the state government has imposed a night curfew in all districts from 10 pm to 5 am till April 30.

Amid the recent rise in cases, the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray-led state government has raised an SOS with the Centre over diminishing vaccine stock. However, the Centre has refuted the allegations, saying that they are spreading “misinformation” on the vaccination.

1. Maharashtra reported 56,286 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, along with 376 virus-related deaths. The state has a total of 5,21,317 active cases. 

2. Mumbai reported a daily rise of 8,938 new infections and 25 deaths. The districts of Pune and Nagpur reported 13,561 and 8,723 new cases respectively, while Nashik saw an all-time record daily rise of 6,508 cases. 

3. 26 vaccination centres were shut in Mumbai on Thursday, a day after the state government flagged a shortage of vaccine stocks. 

4. Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Thursday sought to know why the state was receiving fewer vaccine doses as compared to some other states, like BJP-governed Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, even as it has the highest number of active cases in the country. 

5. Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan dismissed the “Hue and cry” of partisanship by the Centre in vaccine distribution by some states as “farce”, saying non-BJP ruled Maharashtra and Rajasthan were among the top three states in terms of vaccine allocation.

6. A central team arrived at a vaccination centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to review the current situation in the city. “Centre, State, and community need to work together to win this fight,” a member of the team said. 

7. Health Minister Rajesh Tope chaired a meeting with 7 manufacurers of the COVID-19 drug Remdesivir, asking them to double the production for the state. 

8. Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar said that the Army Hospital will provide 40 ICU beds to the city as part of an agreement.
