India is witnessing an alarming spike in COVID-19 cases and Maharashtra alone accounts for almost half of the country’s daily cases. In a first, Maharashtra alone crossed a total of 50,000 coronavirus cases in 24 hours past week. Recently, a Pune hospital ran out of beds due to the rising caseload.
In a recent incident from the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pune’s Pimpri, none of the 400 hospital beds were available and people were forced to get oxygen support in the waiting area, as per reports from NDTV.

Dr Kaustubh Kahane, who works at the Pune hospital told NDTV: “When a new patient arrives, we have to take a call on admitting them and it depends on the severity of illness. If a patient needs oxygen support and no bed is available, then we ensure the patient does not suffer… We immediately ensure oxygen support”.
Since the start of the pandemic, Pune has reported a high number of coronavirus cases, while it has become one of the epicentres in the second wave. On Monday, the city reported more than 8,000 cases. Pune has more than 80,000 cases, according to the latest tally and has the highest number of infections in the state in the recent wave.

Strict restrictions have been imposed in the city, including a 6 pm to 6 am curfew. Shopping centres, temples, cinema halls, bars and hotels have been shut down for a week. Few services have been exempted like door-to-door delivery of food and medicines, and other essential services.
